Laws of Minnesota 1988 CHAPTER 442-S.F.No. 1223 An act relating to state departments and agencies; creating a commission for the quincentennial of the Hispanic presence in the western hemisphere. BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: Section 1. [HISPANIC PRESENCE COMMISSION.] Subdivision 1. [MEMBERSHIP.] The Minnesota Hispanic quincentennial commission consists of seven members, as follows: (1) three members knowledgeable in Hispanic history and culture, appointed by the governor; (2) the director of the state historical society, or the director's designee; (3) one member appointed by the council on affairs of Spanish-speaking people; (4) one member of the Hispanic chamber of commerce appointed by the chamber; (5) one member of the Minnesota migrant council appointed by the council. The members shall serve without compensation. Subd. 2. [MEETINGS.] The commission shall meet at least quarterly commencing July 1, 1988. The commission shall select a chair from its membership. Subd. 3. [PURPOSE.] The commission shall promote greater awareness of the meaning of 500 years of Hispanic culture in the United States and shall design appropriate quincentennial projects. Subd. 4. [POWERS.] The commission may contract in its own name. Contracts must be approved by a majority of the members of the commission and executed by the chair. The commission may apply for, receive, and expend in its own name grants and gifts of money consistent with the purpose specified in subdivision 3. Subd. 5. [EXPIRATION.] This section is repealed December 31, 1992. Approved April 4, 1988
