1.1 A bill for an act 1.2 relating to local government; permitting Grand Rapids 1.3 and other towns to hold their general election in 1.4 November; amending Minnesota Statutes 1998, sections 1.5 205.075, subdivision 2; and 367.03, subdivision 4. 1.6 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 1.7 Section 1. Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 205.075, 1.8 subdivision 2, is amended to read: 1.9 Subd. 2. [ALTERNATE DATE; METROPOLITAN TOWNS.] A town 1.10located in the metropolitan area as defined by section 473.1211.11 may, by resolution or ordinance, designate the first Tuesday 1.12 after the first Monday in November of either the even-numbered 1.13 or the odd-numbered year as the date of the town general 1.14 election. Town supervisors elected at a November town general 1.15 election shall serve four-year terms. 1.16 The ordinance or resolution changing the date of the town 1.17 general election must include a plan to shorten or lengthen the 1.18 terms of office to provide an orderly transition to the November 1.19 election schedule. 1.20 The ordinance or resolution changing the date of the town 1.21 general election may be proposed by the town board or by a 1.22 resolution of the electors adopted at the annual town meeting 1.23 and is effective upon an affirmative vote of the electors at the 1.24 next town general election. 1.25 Sec. 2. Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 367.03, 2.1 subdivision 4, is amended to read: 2.2 Subd. 4. [OFFICERS;METROPOLITAN TOWNSNOVEMBER ELECTION.] 2.3 Supervisors and other town officers in townslocated in the2.4metropolitan area as defined in section 473.121that hold the 2.5 town general election in November shall be elected for terms of 2.6 four years and until their successors are elected and 2.7 qualified. The clerk and treasurer shall be elected in 2.8 alternate years. 2.9 Sec. 3. [GRAND RAPIDS TOWNSHIP; NOVEMBER GENERAL 2.10 ELECTION.] 2.11 Grand Rapids Township may designate the first Tuesday after 2.12 the first Monday in November of either the even-numbered or the 2.13 odd-numbered year as the date of the town general election. The 2.14 ordinance or resolution changing the date of the town general 2.15 election must include a plan to shorten or lengthen the terms of 2.16 office to provide for an orderly transition to the November 2.17 election schedule. The ordinance or resolution changing the 2.18 date of the town general election may be proposed by the town 2.19 board or by a resolution of the electors adopted at the annual 2.20 meeting and is effective upon an affirmative vote of the 2.21 electors at the next town general election. Town supervisors 2.22 elected at a November election shall serve four-year terms and 2.23 shall serve until a successor is elected and qualified.
