  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to local government; authorizing home rule 
  1.3             charter and statutory cities to make grants to 
  1.4             nonprofit community food shelves; proposing coding for 
  1.5             new law in Minnesota Statutes, chapter 465. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  [465.039] [GIFTS TO ORGANIZATIONS DISTRIBUTING 
  1.8   FOOD.] 
  1.9      The governing body of a home rule charter or statutory city 
  1.10  may appropriate each year out of the general fund of the city, 
  1.11  or other unrestricted money, an amount not to exceed $5,000 to 
  1.12  provide grants to nonprofit organizations operating community 
  1.13  food shelves that provide food to the needy without charge. 
  1.14     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.15     This act is effective the day following final enactment.
