  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to public safety; regulating public safety 
  1.3             officer's survival benefits; providing educational 
  1.4             benefits for certain surviving children. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICER'S SURVIVOR BENEFITS; 
  1.7   EDUCATIONAL BENEFITS FOR CERTAIN SURVIVING CHILDREN.] 
  1.8      Each surviving child of a volunteer firefighter killed in 
  1.9   the line of duty before July 1, 1990, who was eligible to 
  1.10  receive educational benefits as of that date under Minnesota 
  1.11  Statutes, section 299A.45, but for whom educational certificates 
  1.12  were not issued by the department of public safety, shall be 
  1.13  eligible to receive an educational benefit award equal to the 
  1.14  amount the child would have been eligible to receive had the 
  1.15  certificates been promptly issued after July 1, 1990. 
  1.16     The awards under this section are otherwise subject to 
  1.17  Minnesota Statutes, section 299A.45. 
  1.18     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.19     Section 1 is effective the day after final enactment.
